The Gloves Are Off: Britain Is Broken

Why I’m launching The Charlie Sansom Show—and why no political party, public institution or media figure will receive a free pass.

Britain in 2026 has developed a rather peculiar understanding of democracy.

Democracy is sacred—unless you vote the wrong way.

Tolerance is compulsory—unless you expect any in return.

Question mass immigration and you are called a racist. Question gender ideology and you are called a bigot. Vote for Brexit and spend the next decade being told that you misunderstood the question.

You are expected to pay your taxes, naturally. Just do not expect much representation in return.

And if what you really want is a country in which you and your family feel safe, you may be advised to start packing.

I have worked with former prime ministers, would-be prime ministers, council leaders, major journalists and political figures from the far Left to the far Right. I have appeared in front of the camera and worked behind it. I have seen political messages being delivered, and I have seen how they are constructed.

After all of that, I keep returning to the same conclusion:

This country is broken.

The government says it inherited the problems. The opposition claims it predicted them—while conveniently overlooking its role in creating many of them. The civil service implements the policies, or fails to implement them, and somehow remains largely untouched by the consequences.

The public pays the bill.

The public lives with the result.

That is why the gloves are coming off.

This one is mine

I am not new to cameras.

I have appeared on BBC News, GB News, TalkTV and Dan Wootton Outspoken, among others. I have contributed to programmes, produced programmes and spent years working within political media.

But The Charlie Sansom Show is different.

This one is mine.

That is exciting. It is also daunting. If it succeeds, that responsibility belongs to me. If it fails, so does that.

Many people launch programmes because they want to be heard. Before launching mine, I wanted to understand why it needed to exist.

The answer lies in the strange collection of experiences that brought me here.

I have spent much of my adult life moving between pubs, festival stages, political meetings, television studios, editing suites, websites, programme launches and, at one particularly inconvenient point, hospital wards.

Those worlds may appear disconnected. They are not.

Together, they have shaped how I understand attention, persuasion, power, loyalty, ambition, failure and ownership. They have also taught me that the public usually sees the finished outcome, while the choices, compromises and mistakes that produced it remain hidden.

That gap—between the public story and the reality behind it—is where this show begins.

The politics of evasion

Politics is divisive, but I do not mind disagreement.

In fact, I quite enjoy it, provided the other person has thought seriously about what they are saying and is prepared to defend it.

What I cannot stand is evasion.

I cannot stand people who make a decision and then discuss the consequences as though they had no idea what was happening.

I cannot stand people who spend enormous amounts of money but cannot show you what it produced.

I cannot stand people who change the promise once they have secured the result. I have some personal experience of that one.

And I have very little time for people who demand loyalty that they would never return.

Things go wrong. That is unavoidable.

What is not unavoidable is the refusal to admit it.

Politics today is filled with excuses, deflection and elaborate explanations for why the person currently holding power cannot possibly be responsible for what is happening.

The people responsible explain why it was somebody else’s fault.

What does the public receive in return?

Lies and higher taxes.

That is why this programme will keep returning to a series of simple questions.

Who made the decision?

What were they trying to achieve?

What did it cost?

What was promised?

What was actually delivered?

And when it failed, who answered for it?

Not every serious problem has an easy answer. Most do not. But complexity has become a very useful hiding place for politicians who would prefer not to choose, act or accept responsibility.

I want to force them out of hiding.

When failing less badly becomes success

The strange thing about modern Britain is that, officially, everything is always getting better.

NHS waiting lists fall, but millions of people are still waiting.

Small-boat arrivals fall, but the border system remains visibly unresolved.

Housing affordability improves, but ordinary working people still cannot afford an ordinary home.

The economy grows, but households are left wondering why their bills appear to rise faster than their wages.

I am not denying that improvement is preferable to deterioration. Of course it is.

But we have lowered the definition of success to the point where a slightly slower rate of failure is somehow treated as a triumph.

A country is not succeeding because a minister has found a favourable percentage and placed it in a press release.

A country is succeeding when people feel safer.

When work produces a better life.

When taxation results in services that function.

When young people believe they can own something, build something and have a future in the place where they were born.

And when the people running the country are forced to live with the same realities as everybody else.

Instead, the public is routinely invited to disregard what it can see and feel because an official statistic has moved in the preferred direction.

You are not waiting too long, the backlog has fallen.

You are not struggling, the economy has grown.

The border is not out of control, the latest figure is lower than the previous one.

Your home is not unaffordable, affordability has improved.

Somebody simply needs to inform reality.

The distance between what we are told and what we actually experience will be one of the central subjects of this programme.

Everybody gets a clip. Nobody gets an answer.

That same gap exists in political media.

I have been the guest sitting in a studio trying to complete a point before somebody interrupts.

I have also been the producer behind the camera, looking for the moment that people will actually watch.

I understand the pressures from both sides.

Most political debates give you two people, four minutes and absolutely no possibility of reaching a conclusion.

The guests are often selected precisely because everybody already knows what they are going to say. They talk over one another, the presenter declares that it has been a fascinating discussion, and the loudest thirty seconds is uploaded to social media.

Everybody gets a clip.

Nobody gets an answer.

The audience leaves knowing more about whom it dislikes but almost nothing about how the issue itself works.

I understand why this happens.

Conflict attracts attention. Certainty is easy to sell. Nuance is much harder to fit inside a headline or place on a thumbnail.

Presentation matters. A strong argument presented badly can disappear. A terrible argument packaged brilliantly can travel around the world.

But presentation should help people understand an idea. It should not disguise the fact that there is nothing underneath it.

I do not want to spend every week chasing whichever story produced the angriest clip that morning.

I want to get beneath the performance and establish what remains true once everybody has stopped shouting.

Right-wing, but not tribal

This will not be a party broadcast.

I am broadly right-wing. I have no intention of pretending otherwise.

But being right-wing does not require me to defend every politician, party or policy that claims to belong to the Right.

There are intelligent people on the Left.

There are cowards, frauds and idiots on the Right.

And there are people throughout politics who will abandon every principle they claim to hold the moment that principle becomes personally inconvenient.

Some events are scandals.

Some are institutional failures.

Some are genuinely complicated.

I want to know the difference.

The programme will cover politics, power, media and business, but it will also be personal. I will draw on the things I have witnessed, the mistakes I have made and the lessons I have learned—especially when events have gone badly.

I want to challenge the people with whom I disagree.

But I also intend to challenge the people I am supposedly expected to support.

Because if your principles apply only to the other side, they are not principles.

The standard

I am not asking viewers to agree with me about everything.

I would be slightly concerned if they did.

I am asking them to judge the programme by a straightforward standard.

Was the argument honest?

Did the evidence justify the confidence?

Did I take the opposing case seriously, or did I select its weakest possible version because it was easier to attack?

I will try to distinguish between what I know, what I have experienced and what I believe.

What I know should be supported by evidence.

What I have experienced gives me a perspective, but it does not make that perspective universally true.

What I believe is my judgement and viewers are perfectly entitled to challenge it.

I will get things wrong.

When I do, I will correct them.

When I change my mind, I will explain why.

I have no interest in quietly deleting an old position and returning six months later pretending I always held the new one.

I want this programme to be candid, sceptical and properly researched.

I also want it to be entertaining.

Politics is already miserable enough.

What comes next

From Monday to Thursday, The Charlie Sansom Show will deal with the political circus as it happens.

Sundays will be different: longer conversations, deeper investigations and some of the experiences that shaped the way I understand politics, media and business.

That will include, at some point, the story of how a singer and DJ from Basildon ended up working with everyone from George Galloway to Liz Truss.

But that is a story for another day.

For now, the proposition is simple.

No party receives automatic loyalty.

No institution is beyond scrutiny.

No public figure gets a free pass.

And no subject becomes too complicated to question merely because the people responsible would prefer us to stop asking.

The gloves are off.

This should be fun.
